'Take a Trek Thru Outdoor Rec' showcases opportunities, facilities at Edwards Published Aug. 3, 2011 By Melissa Buchanan 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Edwards Outdoor Recreation is offering Team Edwards a chance to go on an adventure, a treasure hunt with stops all around base, Aug. 14-20. This pirate-themed Air Force Materiel Command program, "Take a Trek Thru Outdoor Rec 2011," starts at Bldg. 7211, Outdoor Recreation's main building where participants pick up their treasure maps then visit multiple ODR facilities on the map. According to Josh Soldan, ODR director, AFMC created this program to introduce and highlight what ODR has to offer. "A lot of people on this base don't know that we have about 23 different facilities on base, and that Outdoor Recreation has over 500 pieces of equipment to rent. This program is a great way to get out and see all the different things you could participate in," he said. A total of nine locations will have stickers to put on the maps at scheduled times throughout the week. "They'll collect stickers and will get prizes at each facility," said Amber Mitchell, ODR operations assistant. "If they get six out of the nine [stickers] they are entered to win a $500 force support squadron gift card." Once the treasure map has at least six stickers, participants can take it back to ODR where it will be entered into the drawing. The winners will be selected Aug. 24 at Bldg. 7211 with the grand prize being the $500 gift card and second prize being a GPS unit. The various locations include the Outdoor Recreation main building, the Rod & Gun Club, paintball field, disc golf course, Muroc Pool, Oasis Aquatic Center, Sonic Splash Pool, BMX track and Branch Pond. Schedules of when stickers will be available at the different facilities will be handed out with the treasure maps at the main building. Incentive prizes will also be given at each location, which include kaleidoscopes, eye patches, mini playing cards and mini magnifying glasses. "[The incentive items are] geared more towards the younger kids, but we encourage adults as well due to the fact it is a $500 gift card, and you can use it here at ODR for all your rental equipment that you already spend money on. So it's really for everyone," Mitchell said. The gift card may also be used at other 95th FSS facilities including the Aero Club, Arts and Crafts Center, Auto Hobby Shop, Club Muroc, fitness center, bowling center, Muroc Lake Golf Course, libraries, lodging, Oasis Community Center and for youth and child care.
