Edwards Airman' s Campus gets Air Force Dining Facility

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Joshua Tree Dining Facility, also known as the DFAC, opened its doors for the first time since 2006 here Oct. 15. Available primarily for unaccompanied active duty enlisted military members permanently assigned, or on temporary duty to Edwards AFB, the reopened dining facility will be serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a midnight meal, 7 days a week.

The decision to reopen the facility came in 2010 after General Carroll H. Chandler, then Vice Chief-of-Staff, U.S. Air Force visited Edwards and expressed concern in concert with base leaders over the lack of an Air Force dining facility. Chandler agreed a dining facility was needed and necessary, taking the issue back to Washington D.C. to fund the project.

According to Col. Greg Schwab, commander 95th Air Base Wing, Air Force Material Command has made dining facilities a priority and Gen. Donald J. Hoffman, commander, AFMC, has made it clear, despite a difficult and challenging budget environment, AFMC bases will not look to dining facilities to save money or cut their budgets below which is necessary to serve our core customer - active duty unaccompanied enlisted members.

"This is another improvement to the Airman' s Campus," said Chief Master Sgt. Bill Thomaston, command chief, 95th Air Base Wing. "A campus of several exciting activities that surround the dormitories."

Including the new dining facility, Edwards Airmen and Marines are within walking distance to several recreational and quality-of-life activities such as a hockey rink, gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, disc golf course, fitness center, education center, auto hobby shop, craft center, community center, tickets and tours, library, credit union and movie theater.

"Airmen were expressing a need for something outside of their dorm rooms," the commander said. "I want our dorm residents, Airmen and Marines, to know these facilities are there for them. They should never again feel like the only option available to them is to stay in their dorm room with nothing to do."

"We have a duty to our Airmen to make sure our core customers are taken care of," emphasized Schwab. "Dining facilities are an important part of Air Force heritage, they are where our culture is passed and camaraderie takes place over good nutritious meals. The 95 ABW is proud to once again bring this service to our Airmen and we hope our Airmen will enjoy it."

The dining facility is located at 130 W. Popson Ave., Building 2412. Service is being offered by Rice Services Incorporated under the guidance of the 95th Services Directorate.
