Airman's Campus -- Base Theater offers wide selection of movies at unbeatable prices Published Nov. 21, 2011 By Laura Mowry Staff Writer EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- You can't wait to head to the theater to see the latest movie that Tinseltown has to offer, but all too often that trip turns the Hollywood blockbuster into an unexpected budget buster. But a trip to the Base Theater won't bust anyone's budget. The Base Theater is a great option for the Edwards community and ideal for those who live on base; conveniently located and offering a variety of films at an unbeatable price. Moviegoers have their choice from family films to horror flicks. Anyone with base access can go to the theater. For the Edwards Army Air Force Exchange Service general manager, Russ Hinrichs, watching a movie at the base theater is a no-brainer. "It's such a short drive, especially for the people who live on base. You can't beat the proximity and cost, plus there's a good selection of movies. It's here, so definitely use it," said Hinrichs. The cost for adults is $3, for children between the ages of six and 11 it's $1.50, and children under the age of five get in free. The theater also runs promotional events such as free matinees. The next free matinee, "Real Steel," rated PG-13, is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3. More than a movie theater or the location for public gatherings, occasionally, the theater transforms itself into an event hotspot. In September, the theater was filled to capacity when the Edwards community showed up for the screening of "Killer Elite." The red carpet was rolled out as attendees hoped to catch a glimpse of Hollywood A-listers Jason Statham, Dominic Purcell, Yvonne Strahovski and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Before curtain call, some 200 of Team Edwards who had been deployed or were family members of the deployed were able to talk with the cast and have autographs signed at the Army Air Force Exchange Service-sponsored event. Events such as the "Killer Elite" screening boost the morale of the Edwards community, organizers say. When movies are available for pre-screening, the Edwards Army Air Force Exchange coordinates with headquarters, located in Dallas, Texas to bring them to the Edwards community. "We are real close to Hollywood, so as often as possible, we want to bring these events to Edwards," said Hinrichs. When you also consider that numerous movies have been filmed at Edwards -- sometimes with Team Edwards members included as extras in the film -- screening films such as "Transformers" and "Iron Man" bring the community together. "Movies that have been filmed here helps bring the screening here. It's great, people really seem to enjoy those screenings," Hinrichs said. Whether you're looking for a good movie during the weekend, interested in saving money, or Hollywood A-listers have invaded Edwards, the base theater great entertainment at a great value, Hinrichs says. The base theater is currently closed during the week of Thanksgiving and will reopen on Thursday, Dec. 1.
