AFRL's new and improved Club Rocket Room becoming place to be Published June 25, 2012 By Kenji Thuloweit 95th Air Base Wing Public Affairs EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Air Force Research Laboratory Detachment 7 has a new place to eat and chill out. After a Team Edwards collaborative effort, AFRL's workforce can get freshly-cooked meals at the new and improved Club Rocket Room. It's the result of an aggressive pursuit by Col. Michael Platt, AFRL Det. 7 commander, to improve the facility for AFRL's remote personnel. Col. Gregory Schwab, 95th Air Base Wing commander funded the renovations at a total cost of just over $73,000. Club Rocket Room officially opened for business May 7. The dining facility got a new name with the 95th Force Support Squadron taking over operations affording Club Muroc advertised ownership of the facility and operations. Renovations include a new exhaust hood and roof mounted ventilation; new fire suppression system; supplemental air inlets; new electrical and gas line installation; a fresh coat of paint and maintenance on facility infrastructure to support the kitchen. Commercial grade cooking appliances including grill ovens, steamers, deep fryers and dishwasher were included in the renovation. This quality equipment was donated by Club Muroc, which significantly decreased the overall cost of the renovation. Aesthetically, the entry way got a fresh coat of paint. Rocket Propulsion/Research adhesive photographs were created by Dean Richards and Shawn Smith of the AFRL Graphics Department that now embellish the surrounding interior walls as a visual heritage of the research and experimentation that goes on at the site on a continuing basis. AFRL and 95th FSS information technology specialists worked to install and properly locate the point-of-sale electronic system that ensures fast and accurate ordering and payment recording. "Being so far removed from everything, it's really convenient to have out here. I like the variety of food, and options. I forget my lunch plenty of times and it keeps me from going hungry," said Tech. Sgt. Carlos Najera, AFRL Mechanical Shop. "Good food, really enjoy the breakfast. Especially the coffee and burrito," said Nils Sedano, AFRL Engines Branch. AFRL leadership said they are grateful to 95th ABW, 95th Civil Engineering Division, ACE Engineering, 95th FSS and the people of Club Muroc. "The Rocket Room is quickly becoming the social hub of the lab, where our personnel are able to relax, enjoy outstanding food and celebrate special events together. The club staff has been absolutely incredible in the service and support they have provided to AFRL, Det. 7," said Platt.
