The events of Sept. 11, 2001, had profound impact on a generation of Americans. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Northern Virginia. The unprecedented attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,996 people, marking it as the deadliest terrorist act in world history.
At the time of the attacks, the Air Force Materiel Command was participating in a planned Department of Defense Acquisition and Logistics Excellence Week. Immediately following the attacks, AFMC cancelled involvement in the event and transitioned to a wartime posture.
Under SAF/AQ direction, a third series of Lightning Bolt initiatives launched to meet warfighter needs. AFMC went on to support Operation NOBLE EAGLE for homeland defense and then Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, beginning Oct. 7, 2001. AFMC applied Technology Push and Pull through the Air Force Research Laboratory, processed urgent Combat Mission Needs Statements, accelerated fielding of systems such as Armed Predators, the Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser and the Joint Direct Attack Munition. The command provided extensive logistical sustainment including accelerated depot maintenance and a dedicated Logistics Response Cell.
These efforts, along with broader acquisition reforms, underpinned the highly precise air campaign of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in March 2003.
AFMC personnel and family members experienced 9/11 across active duty, Guard, Reserve, civilian, and family roles at locations including the Pentagon, Andrews AFB, Lackland AFB, Wright-Patterson AFB, F. E. Warren and elsewhere.
