Sunny airdrops over Son Tay

  • Published

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- A C-130J dropped two palletized water containers while flying above an area known as the Son Tay drop zone of the Eglin Test and Training Complex May 30.  The flight and drop were part of a 417th Flight Test Squadron test mission and a monthly training requirement for the unit’s aircrews.

That range area is unofficially called the Son Tay drop zone, due to the joint Air Force and Army training that took place there in 1970.  The training was in preparation for Operation Ivory Coast and the infamous Northern Vietnamese prison camp raid.
