A key date is quickly approaching for people interested in or planning on running in the 2008 United States Air Force Marathon here.

As with many running events, prices are cheaper with early registration. The first cutoff date to save money for the Air Force Marathon is May 31.

"People can register right up until the day before the Sept. 20 event, if the event is not sold out at 10,000 runners," said Marathon race director Molly Louden. "But in order to save money -- up to $30 in many cases -- runners need to register by the end of this month."

Runners can sign up online at http://www.usafmarathon.com. Complete details can be found on the marathon website or by calling 1-800-467-1823.

This year's options include a full marathon (with a wheeled marathon division), half-marathon and 10-kilometer individual and four-person team races Sept. 20. A 5-kilometer event will take place Sept. 19 at nearby Wright State University.

"Registration for the marathon is $65 right now and will increase throughout the summer," Ms. Louden said, "but if you wait until September the price goes up to $95. Similarly, the 10K price goes from $35 now to $60 later. This monetary incentive is offered to runners in order to help the marathon staff better plan for the event. The more we know about the number of people attending, the better we can provide an exciting and memorable marathon for everyone involved."

In addition to the marathon and associated running events, a Sports and Fitness Exposition is set for Sept. 18 and 19 at the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University. All race and expo events are open to the public.

This is the 12th running of the U.S. Air Force Marathon. It was created to help commemorate the founding of the Air Force as a separate military service on Sept. 18, 1947.
