The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System – HIMARS – lands in Romania
Natochannel
Sept. 11, 2022 | 5:38
SYNOPSIS
The US M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, was flown into Romania as part of an exercise to demonstrate how rapidly it can be deployed.
The UK’s Royal Air Force flew the HIMARS from the UK to Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport in Constanta, on the south-eastern coast of Romania. The US-led exercise, called ATREUS, helped familiarise Romanian soldiers with the rocket launcher system, which gives NATO the ability to conduct powerful long-range precision strikes. ATREUS has also been taking place in Poland and Norway. In Romania, no live-firing was conducted. ATREUS ran from 7 to 11 November 2022.
Footage includes shots of a UK RAF transport plane landing, HIMARS rolling off and being driven around by Romanian soldiers as well as soundbites from Major General Iulian Berdilă, chief of the Romanian Land Forces.

(03:47) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) MAJOR GENERAL IULIAN BERDILĂ, CHIEF OF THE ROMANIAN LAND FORCES

“Very simply put, this is how do you take a HIMARS launcher and prepare to target acquisition and then to fire in a very timely manner, and the need to execute this very much is inside the new concept of all the Allies that we have is the multi-domain operations. This is very much proof of the multi-domain operations concept, and it comes down to, like I said, a very simple exercise, but very complex and meaningful objectives that we all have in the south-eastern part of Europe and in the Black Sea region.”
(04:30) SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) MAJOR GENERAL IULIAN BERDILĂ, CHIEF OF THE ROMANIAN LAND FORCES

“The capacity and capability of the Allies to integrate operational-level capabilities remains crucial, especially in the new security environment but also for the perseverance and coherence that all Allies have in the region. For that purpose, Romania plans to have this pool of capabilities that can provide the set of interoperable operational long-range fires and today again with the help from our UK and US Allies, we managed to prove that we're successful, and we're very much determined to maintain the operational agility so the capacity to move long-range fire systems in a very short time and where timely needed and this is very much successful proof of our soldiers and all who contributed to plan and execute such an exercise.”
