B-ROLL Package of Hawaii Army National Guard soldiers working with first responders to help support Hawaii County. The soldiers from 93rd WMD-CST (Weapons of Mass Destruction-Civil Support Team) evaluated the air quality in parts of Pahoa. They also tested the pH levels of the water to determine whether acid rain was present in the area.

Acid Rain Test: 1:54-2:20

SOT: Army Staff Sergeant Marc Aquino, 93rd WMD-CST, Hawaii Army National Guard

2;35-2;28

“The mission of the 93rd Civil Support Team out here is to advise, access, and assist local first responders, mainly the fire department, and air monitoring the surrounding areas of concern based on what the EOC provided as well as help establish communications for any aircrafts or anything of that sort.”

2:59-3:24 “The purpose -we want to make sure that basically it’s safety. For the civilians as well as the first responders and ensure that at any time they’re working or going about their lives that the designated area is safe to move. In order to do that, We have to do periodical monitoring and that’s what we’ve been tasked to do at this time.”

3:25-4:09 “Acid rain, so once you get the volcano, the lava getting contact with the water, you’re getting these fumes that are coming up. And when it starts condensing and rain falling, you’re getting all that chemicals on you as well as with the rain. With that in mind, that’s why we do paper tests. We use these pH acid level tests that will help you determine that and it will give you a clear indicator. Not only does it help give us the pH levels of it but it also lets us know if our detection equipment is safe because they’re also susceptible to being damaged by that rain.”
