About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Position Lead Police Officer (CATM) (GS-0083-07) to work at the 412th Security Forces Squadron S4C, AFMC at Edwards AFB, CA.

The primary purpose of this position is: To enforce law, maintain law and order, preserve the peace, and protect life and civil rights within the jurisdiction of the military installation.  To perform Combat Arms (CA) training and maintenance on CA and promote personal and weapons safety to assigned installation and tenant personnel.  Control and operate firing ranges; inspect, perform sub-depot repairs, and maintain small arms and light weapons.

Typical 2026 salary range: $62,504- $81,257per year (includes Locality)

Desired Skills:

Demonstrate at least 3 years of specialized experience at or equivalent to Police Officer.

4 years of Police experience required. (Military or Civilian).

Experience with team readiness, proficiency and preparedness on the installation through the use of training activities, validation and certification processes.

Major Duties:

Knowledge of police officer procedures and operating methods to perform the full range of police officer activities independently to include the rights of detained individuals and organizational rules regarding the appropriate use of force to be used in the apprehension of persons.

Knowledge of special operating requirements, methods, and procedures for enforcing specialized personnel access controls and preventing unauthorized access to areas where stringent security requirements are enforced.

Knowledge  of Armory operations and procedures.

Knowledge of principles, techniques, and safety of instruction used in combat arms weapons training, firing range instruction, weapons security, and combat arms minor repair procedures.

Skills in combat arms resources management, including maintenance of assigned weapons, classrooms, firing range structures, munitions buildings, and weapons storage facilities. 

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and instruct training courses in a classroom seminar setting. 

Knowledge of the full range of security forces, and police and law enforcement services which requires considerable training, experience, and proficiency to perform the full range of operations in preventing or resolving offenses.

Knowledge of security and security forces requirements, procedures, and tactics to support installation physical security and contingency operations.

Knowledge of firearms and tactics for employing them in emergency situations.

Ability to Supervise and coach personnel during live-fire operations on marksmanship fundamentals, proper weapon handling procedures, correcting stoppages, weapon/range safety and munitions safety procedures.

Ability to adhere and enforce guidelines on weapon/range safety and hazard mitigation during small arms range operations. 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest
  • Obtain & maintain security clearance.
  • This is a designated Drug Testing Position.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • Must pass an initial pre-employment medical examination, periodic medical examinations, meet established hearing standards and discern colors, contrast, and depth, and required initial and annual Department of the Air Force Civilian Police (DACP) Physical Agility Test.
  • Must pass formal law enforcement training school as determined by AF/A4S and obtain DoW Peace Officer Standardization and Training Certification.
  • Knowledge of applicable law enforcement and security AF, Federal and Dow rules, regulations, instructions, practices, principals, and procedures including force protection, integrated base defense, anti-terrorism, and physical security.
  • Knowledge of safety, security, and EEO regulations, practices, and procedures.
  • The Physical Agility Test (PAT) is a condition of employment standard which requires applicants to successfully pass the established standards push-ups 19 (within 2 minutes), and 1.5-mile run (17:30 or less).
  • Must attend  or graduation from the Combat Arms Training and Maintenance Apprentice Course and Combat Arms Training and Maintenance Craftsmen Course is desirable.  (Reference AFI 36-2226).
