Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic (WG-5803-10) Published April 7, 2026 About the Role: The Air Force Test Center (AFTC) is looking for a Full-Time Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic (WG-5803-10) to work at 412th Test Wing, Air Force Plant 42 (AFMC/412 TW/OL-AFP 42) at Air Force Plant 42 (LG) in Palmdale, CA. The primary purpose of this position is: To troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, modify, and maintain a variety of types of heavy mobile and automotive equipment. To perform operation and maintenance services tasks inclusive of all accessories and components of the primary, secondary, ancillary, auxiliary types of heavy mobile and automotive and equipment at ASC Det I, Air Force Plant 42, a Government Owned-Contractor Operated (GOCO) industrial plant. Areas of Consideration (AOC): Department – wide (DoD) Desired Skills: 2 years of welding and fabrication experience 2 years of automotive HVAC experience and certification 2 years of fleet diagnostic experience. Major Duties: • Performs comprehensive mechanic work on heavy mobile equipment, including troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining machinery like container handlers, bulldozers, and cranes. • Conducts major overhauls, teardowns, and rebuilds of complex systems in heavy equipment, such as diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines (including supercharged and turbocharged variants). • Repairs and maintains a wide variety of heavy equipment systems, including transmissions, gear reduction systems, drive line assemblies, and electrical/electronic systems. • Interprets and applies technical documentation, such as repair manuals, schematics, and diagnostic codes, to guide repair work. • Performs automotive mechanic work on a range of vehicles including forklifts, trucks, buses, and sedans, determining the type and extent of repairs needed. • Repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls various automotive systems like engines, transmissions, drive lines, and fuel injection systems. • Utilizes a variety of diagnostic tools and equipment, such as computerized engine analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters, to test and diagnose malfunctions. • Manages the parts ordering process by researching technical manuals and obtaining necessary authorizations for purchases. • Documents all work accomplished on work orders and vehicle records, and provides on-the-job training to trainee mechanics. • Adheres to all safety practices and procedures, utilizes appropriate safety equipment, and is responsible for the proper handling of hazardous materials. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures and environmental directives pertaining to handling hazardous materials. Skill in troubleshooting and repairing malfunctions in a variety of types of heavy mobile equipment and automotive vehicles. Skill in using a variety of hand and power tools, measuring instruments, and items of test equipment.
