About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Position Locksmith (WG-4804-09) to work at the 412th Test Wing,412th Civil Engineer Group, 412th Civil Engineer Squadron, Structures Element (CES/CEOHS) at Edwards AFB.        

To repair, overhaul, modify, test, and install locking devices and their working interrelationship with monitors, alarms, timing mechanisms, sensors, and other related items which make up a complete security or surveillance system. The work includes the manufacture and duplication of keys and the keying and combination of locking mechanisms as well as neutralization techniques to determine if locking devices have been tampered with.

Typical 2026 salary range: $31.92 - $37.26 Hourly (includes Locality)

Desired Skills:

- Minimum of Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL)

- +2 yrs of experience in the field of Locksmithing or Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL)

Major Duties:

- Modify and rework locking devices to accomplish repairs to existing locking mechanisms.

- Establish and maintain Master Key Coding System to include data entry from analog records to Digital records

- Make new keys from duplications, impressions, and key codes from a variety of key blanks, at times decoding current locks to make new keys.

- Maintain bench stock levels of parts, materials, tools, and equipment such as blank keys for duplication, duplicating machine, jewelers tools and lathe, bench grinder, combination grinder etc...

- Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, specifications, and work orders

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest
  • Obtain & Maintain Secret Security clearance.
  • The work will require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid California driver’s license will be required for the position.
  • This is a designated Drug Testing Position
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical.
  • Flightline driving/testing is required.
  • Employee will be classified as Mission Essential.
  • Shift work may be required
  • Must possess knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures
  • Must have the ability to plan and organize work assignments to include determining resources required to accomplish the mission
  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays
  • Emergency overtime may be required
  • Must obtain and maintain a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
  • May be required to train/guide lower-graded (or other trades) military/civilian employees
  • Will be required to participate in base contingency exercises
  • Knowledge of the master key system; and internal structure and operating characteristics of a wide range of makes, models, and types of common mechanical locking mechanisms and of their working interrelationship with related components.
  • Skill in using small hand tools, soldering irons and brazing torches; adjusting and using powered tools common to the trade.
  • Ability to select commonly used neutralization techniques; apply technical manuals, manufacturers diagrams and specifications; and determine work sequence.
  • Skill in the manipulation of combination locks as well as picking key locks by determining number of wheel tumblers, locating and plotting contact point readings on graphs, and determining true centers using a developed sense of “feel” and hearing aids such as stethoscopes to amplify sounds within the lock case.
