Newcomers - Commuting The two primary commuting routes to Edwards' main base are California State Highway 14, also known as the Antelope Valley Freeway, for people living in Lancaster, Palmdale and other cities and towns to the south, and California State Highway 58 for people living north or east of Edwards. Highway 58 is the main route to reach the Air Force Research Lab. Speed limits along these roads are in the 65- to 70-mph range, making it practical to live relatively far from base. Traffic is rare, but -- as is common at all bases -- it can back up at the gates during periods of increased security. There is no public transportation serving Edwards at this time, though carpooling is encouraged. A minimum commute to base is roughly 20 minutes.
