Mission Statement

Support of our National Military Strategy by providing new warfighting capability to the fleet by testing aircraft, weapons, and weapon systems in an operationally relevant environment. Develop advanced warfighting tactics for the fleet operator to enable him/her to lay waste to our enemies with violent prejudice.

Air Test & Evaluation Squadron NINE, Detachment Edwards Air Force Base (VX-9 Det Edwards) is a Navy Operational Test unit that flies, maintains, and tests the F-35C Lightning II at Edwards AFB, CA.  The unit is a detachment of VX-9, which is located at China Lake, CA.  VX-9 Det Edwards began flying the F-35C in 2017 and participated in the Initial Operational Test & Evaluation of the F-35 as part of the JSF Operational Test Team along with USAF, USMC, RAF, RNAF, and RAAF operational testers, as well as contract and government staff.

VX-9 Det Edwards is tasked with operational test and analysis of emerging F-35 capabilities and weapons, as well as tactics development and aiding the fleet integration of the F-35C into the carrier air wing.  It is a shore-based command but conducts periodic detachments to other military locations to execute its mission.
