The Marine Aircraft Group Detachment managed to squeeze by the 31st Test and Evaluation Squadron, 40-35, in the first intramural basketball playoff game at the Rosburg Fitness Center here Monday.

Leading the way in the first half for the MAG DET was Buster Evans with two three-pointers and an additional two points.

"The whole team contributed to this effort," Evans said. "We had our players there at the right time to make the plays."

Anthony Perkins made five points and Richard Esquerra made four points for the MAG DET to keep the team ahead of the 31st TES, 23-13.

David Carter and Adrian Kelly each made four points, and Ron Pama made three points for the 31st TES.

During the second half, the 31st TES turned up the heat and briefly took a three point lead. David Carter scored 14 points for the 31st TES to keep the MAG DET sweating. Ron Pama scored four points for the 31st TES.

The intensity between the teams was evident by the large number of fouls each team received. The 31st TES was called for 16 total fouls and the MAG DET was called for 11.
Despite a strong effort by the 31st TES, they could not prevent the relentless Esquerra from scoring 12 points in the second half.

Also a key to the MAG DETs win was Evans' decisive play making.

"What contributed the most to our win was Evans keeping the ball in bounds when we were down three," Esquerra said. "He made that big tip after I missed the free throw and passed it out to me for a shot. That saved it for us."

The intramural basketball championship game is scheduled to take place today at 6 p.m. at the Rosburg Fitness Center.
