    Not Forgotten

    When you walk into many dining facilities in the Air Force, you see it in the corner or off to the side: the lone chair and place setting. In the hurries of our day, we become numb to the sight of it: the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action table with a setting for someone who has never returned. Every year, on the third Friday of September, we remember and honor former prisoners of war and the families of those whose loved ones never returned from war.
  • Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. John H. Canty was one of eight crewmembers aboard a B-26 Maurader on a nighttime bombing mission from Easton Lodge-Essex, England, against targets near Caen, France. His B-26 was shot down between the villages of Baron-sur-Odon and Gavrus, France on June 22, 1944.

    World War II Airman remains recovered

    An Airman who served with 555th Bombardment Squadron, 386th Bombardment Group, 9th Bomber Command, during World War II was accounted for Jan. 22, 2018.

    Searching for daddy in Bien Hoa

    They were 30 miles outside of Saigon and their van had been overcome by the southern mercenary part of the Viet Cong. For a few minutes things were on the up and up and then a couple of the Viet Cong men came around to the back of the van and opened the doors. That is when they were captured. Those are the words ingrained in the head Nora Moore of the last documented days of her father, then-Tech. Sgt. Thomas Moore.

    DPAA Accounts for 183 Missing Service Members in Fiscal Year 2017

    In fiscal year 2017, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency accounted for 183 formerly missing persons from past conflicts. Also, the agency individually identified the remains of 18 additional personnel, who were previously accounted for as part of group burials, reaching another milestone of 201 total identifications for the fiscal year.

    Search for our fallen continues

    Drenched in sweat from the hot, humid Vietnam weather, our shovels breached the earth’s surface excavating the ground and placing it into buckets to be screened as we searched for one of our own.
  • On April 7, 1966, Air Force Capt. Robert Barnett was the pilot of a B-57B Canberra on a strike mission over Laos when his aircraft was hit by hostile ground fire and crashed. Barnett was declared killed in action. After his remains were recently recovered, the Texas native was laid to rest April 7, 2017, at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas.     Missing Persons Branch aids family of Vietnam-era pilot, many others

    A 51-year journey, to the day, came to an end last month. Air Force Capt. Robert Barnett was laid to rest April 7, 2017, with full military honors at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas.

    Annual reunion honors sacrifice of POW, MIA service members

    Members of the 560th Flying Training Squadron hosted the 44th annual Freedom Flyer Reunion and 20th annual POW/MIA (prisoner of war/missing in action) Symposium March 30-31, 2017, at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas.

    USAFE band member discovers family history on Memorial Day

    Senior Airman Colby Fahrenbacher, a tuba player in the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band, grew up hearing stories about his great-uncle Merle Noffsinger, who served with the Army Air Force. Fahrenbacher's great-uncle, Tech. Sgt. Merle Noffsinger, was a gunner and bombardier on the B-24 Liberator, and he was shot down May 1, 1943, during a mission over the Mediterranean Sea .

Michael Gruber, the 35th Communications Squadron director of operations, set out to pay respect to America’s prisoners of war and missing in action, as well as stand in solidarity with his father who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, by running 85 miles for 24 hours straight, Sept. 18, 2015, at Misawa Air Base, Japan.     24-hour journey for heroes, father

    He reached his 5th hour of running alone in the still of a dark, cold night lit only by streetlights surrounding the track -- 25 miles down, 75 more to go.

    63 years later: Columbus supports MIA ceremony

    Twenty honor guardsmen from Columbus Air Force Base and four T-38 Talons supported a missing in action ceremony Aug. 10 for a Mississippi Airman, exactly 63 years after his aircraft crashed.

  • World War II Airman's remains identified

    The remains of an Airman missing since World War II, have been identified and are being returned to his family for burial with full military honors, said the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in a Defense Department news release issued Aug. 6.

    Missing Airman from WWII buried at Arlington

    The remains of an Army Air Force Airman who had been missing since World War II was buried with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 4.
