The 95th Medical Group held a Women's Health Fair at the clinic here May 22, focusing on awareness and prevention.

Many different vendors and organizations from around base and the Antelope Valley came together to provide women on base education on how to better take care of their health.

"It's all about giving information to the community and about the importance of taking care of your body," said Staff Sgt. Doris Roldan, an aerospace medical technician for the 95th Medical Group. "It provides a good reminder to women to get their routine check-ups done."

The Women's Health Fair is an annual event, which is geared toward providing women the tools to maintain their Four Dimensions of Wellness, said Maj. Bill Coleman, 95th MDG health care integrator.

Topics ranged from breast cancer awareness to cosmetics.

"I was amazed," said Col. Gale Skousen, 95th MDG commander. "I had no idea it would be as large of an event as it was, with not only a lot of vendors and displays there, but lots of patients and women from the community. It was just a wonderful event."

During the fair, the 95th MDG also hosted a Women's Health Day, during which family health providers focused primarily on women for Pap smear and mammogram appointments along with other women's health-related issues.

"The most beneficial piece of knowledge that women can take away from this is the importance of taking care of their body because they only get one," Sergeant Roldan said. "It also displays the importance of preventive medicine -- preventing illness before it happens."

There is a lot of preparation put into this type of event, said Capt. Caroline Plahuta, group practice manager for the 95th MDG. Different departments in the clinic donated items used to make over 20 gift baskets which were handed out during the fair. The 95th MDG also provided most of the food for the fair.

The Women's Health Fair is a great way to take care of the community, she said. It also assist in keeping military women fit to fight.

More than 100 people attended the event.

"One of the strong focuses we have here at the Medical Group is trying to prevent illnesses from occurring," Colonel Skousen said. "One of the things that the Women's Health Fair has created is an opportunity for women to come in and think about things that can be done to prevent an illness before it occurs."
