About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Model Maker, WG-4714-14 to work at the 412th Test Wing, 412th Maintenance Group, 412th Instrumentation Test Squadron, 412 MXIS/MXI at Edwards AFB, CA.

 

Incumbent serves as an Aerospace Engineering Technician, responsible for independently planning, coordinating, and accomplishing complete major projects entailing the design, layout, machining, and fabrication of metal and plastic models, instruments, and other prototype one-of-a-kind end items constructed from ferrous, non-ferrous metals, plastics, and other pliant materials, utilizing a variety of construction techniques for heating, bonding, surfacing, structuring, etc., for installation on test aircraft.

Location: Edwards, CA (Edwards Air Force Base)

Typical 2025 salary range: $53.40 – $62.31 per hour (includes locality)

• High level of craftsmanship with the ability to cut, shape, and finish models with precision and attention to detail to meet the tight tolerances of engineering designs.

• Able to adapt to new techniques, materials, and tools as technology and materials evolve.

• Meet project deadlines. Adapt and prioritize tasks. Implement critical thinking and problem solving skills to adjust to designs, techniques, and correct errors in the model making process.

 

 

Major Duties:

• Specializing in manufacture technology.

• Serve as an engineering technician working directly with multiple discipline engineers in the design and development of major and/or complex projects related to the temporary type-2 (T-2) aircraft, alternate mission equipment (AME) and equipment modifications.

• Analyze tasks, determine work processes required, estimate costs and established realistic completion schedules

• Provide both technical and authoritative information concerning design concepts and/or modifications, available resources; explain characteristics and availability of various manufacturing processes and materials and verify manufacturing feasibility based upon experience and knowledge.

• Coordinate on developmental projects, keeping appropriate personnel informed of time and material costs, job progress, potential problems

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship

• Obtain & maintain Security clearance

• This is a designated Drug Testing Position

• Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical

• Knowledge of principles, processes, techniques, and applications of the model maker, plastic fabricator, and sheet metal trades. Good technical knowledge of the principles and concepts of many diverse work disciplines such as fabrication, machining, molding, casting, woodworking, thermal processing, inspections and testing techniques.

• Ability to successfully complete unprecedented tasks in an efficient and economical manner, routinely developing and implementing the applications of nonstandard techniques to complex assignments requiring deviation from established practices. Incumbent must be knowledgeable in the basic principles of practical mathematics, physics, geometry, trigonometry, and mechanical motion and be able to apply these to work assignments.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and technical specifications. The incumbent works independently in planning, coordinating, selecting, and implementing proper techniques to accomplish objectives in a timely manner
