11/3/2009 - EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Maintatining good oral health can help in the prevention of overall health issues, because the bacteria in the mouth circulates throughout the body, spreading bacteria and increasing health risks, according to the American Dental Assocation.

The best way to prevent the spread of oral bacteria is by brushing atleast twice a day. However, for some that may not be enough.

The use of a fluoride mouth rinse can supplement the efforts of brushing and help prevent tooth decay, remineralize tooth surfaces and minimizes tooth sensitivity.

Patients at risk of cavities can have their dentist prescribe toothpaste containing a higher concentration of fluoride.

"Fluoride helps strengthen teeth to protect them from decay," said Capt. Alexander Ham, 95th Medical Group. "However, fluoride alone will not prevent decay and should be used in addition to brushing and flossing."

Some patients enjoy an annual fluoride treatment while many do not. For most patients, the amount of fluoride in the water or toothpaste may be sufficient to protect them from cavities. Even though the water at Edwards does not contain sufficient fluoride, only patients who are at a higher risk of dental cavities receive a fluoride treatment as part of their annual cleaning.

For patients who require or request fluoride treatment, the dental clinic provides a fluoride varnish or fluoride gel.

The varnish is more concentrated than the gel, therefore it has more benefits. One perceived disadvantage of fluoride varnish is that it sticks to the teeth for a few hours.

Fluoride is available in many products. Some fluoride products don't require a prescription. It has a lower concentration of fluoride, so it is safe for daily use. Studies suggest that using an over-the-counter daily fluoride rinse is more effective than a higher concentration fluoride done only once a year at the dental clinic. Those fluoride rinses can be found at the Base Exchange and Commissary and are available in various types.

Over 2650 professionals urge the US Congress to stop water fluoridation until Congressional hearings are conducted citing scientific evidence that fluoridation long promoted to fight tooth decay is ineffective and has serious health risks. See statementhttpwww.fluorideaction.orgstatement.august.2007.html. Fluoridation is the addition of unnecessary fluoride chemicals into public water supplies ostensibly to reduce tooth decay in tap water drinkers. Also eleven Environmental Protection Agency employee unions representing over 7000 environmental and public health professionals called for a moratorium on drinking water fluoridation programs across the country and have asked EPA management to recognize fluoride as posing a serious risk of causing cancer in people. Last election day 53 US cities rejected fluoridation joining a growing list of communities saying No to fluoridation

In November 2006 the respected medical journal The Lancetdescribed fluoride as an emerging neurotoxic substancedue to evidence linking fluoride to lower IQs in children andbrain damage in animals. In March 2006 the National Research Council reported thatfluoride is an endocrine disrupter which may interfere withthe normal activity of the thyroid and pineal glands.A May 2006 Harvard study found a significant link betweenfluoridated water and bone cancer in boys.
