EMS Eagles fight for 10th straight win, MMS Tigers cause 1st loss

The Edwards Middle School's basketball record was perfect until they met the Monroe Tigers on Feb. 15. 

The Eagles beat the Mojave Jaguars for their 10th straight win Feb. 13 but succumbed to the Tigers' claws as they lost their final game for the season, 46-35. 

Playing at Mojave, Calif., on Feb 13, Edwards ran up a 28-15 lead against the Jaguars by half time and never trailed in the game. LaCarlis Moore scored 10 points for the Eagles with eight of them coming in the first quarter. Brandon Jefferson lead the team with 12 followed by Bret Gleason with 11 points. Ron Beldo scored eight, Dannon Currie shot three, while Caleb Hayes have two. 

Prior to the game with the Tigers, the Eagles lost its starting guard Dannon Currie to a wrist injury. The Tigers took advantage of the situation and quickly jumped to a 16-12 first quarter lead and maintained at least a four-point advantage the entire game. 

Leading the score for the Tigers was Tommy Woodling with 16 points followed by Vanse Scott and Brandon Sundeen with eight points each. David Puebla scored with six, while Adrian Ortiz and Kevin Bennett picked up four a piece. 

Brandon Jefferson and LaCarlis Moore lead the way for the Eagles with eight points each, while Ron Beldo had six. Bret Gleason scored five while Angelo Antonio and Caleb Hayes pitched in with four each. 

The EMS boy's team finished the season with an impressive 10-1 record and plan to compete in a youth basketball tournament on March 2 to 4 in Bakersfield, Calif.
