JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – Adaptability, agility and a fierce focus on strategic goals helped the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center boost lethality and readiness for the Department of the Air Force while taking care of Airmen, Guardians and families around the world in 2022.

Over the past year, AFIMSC made significant progress along three strategic lines of effort and their associated goals and objectives: LOE 1 - Increase Lethality and Readiness; LOE 2 - Strengthen Airmen, Guardians and Families; and LOE3 - Pursue Organizational Excellence. Each line of effort has a dedicated champion – an AFIMSC senior leader – focused on establishing standards, developing metrics and achieving desired outcomes.

Commitment and teamwork across the organization laid the foundation for a successful year, said Sam Grable, AFIMSC Installation Support director and LOE 1 champion.

“We can credit success to the AFIMSC command team setting the right tone and providing needed resources, the strategy team managing the process very well, and the power of the collective – headquarters, detachments and primary subordinate units – in understanding and working tirelessly to provide what our Airmen and Guardians need,” he said. “Underpinning it all is the brainpower and creativity of our remarkably skilled staff.”

Notable AFIMSC achievements in 2022 include:

• Developing and issuing state-of-the-infrastructure reports to installations and major commands.

• Adding installation climate resilience plans to installation energy plans.

• Improving the housing privatization program by finalizing documents for a universal lease, implementing housing inspections and establishing a portfolio assessment program to analyze project owner performance.

• Increasing Security Forces’ readiness with a more realistic training curriculum.

• Expanding Food 2.0 capabilities and completing campus dining system pilot deployment to include several locations outside the continental U.S.

• Increasing family child care capacity by certifying 368 new family child care providers.

• Funding and managing numerous military construction projects to deliver critical infrastructure and expand mission capability.

• Finding, funding and developing innovative projects initiated by Airmen and Guardians at all levels.

Throughout the year, the AFIMSC team kept a close watch on all goals and objectives to ensure they matured and progressed in support of the National Defense Strategy, Secretary of the Air Force Operational Imperatives, Air Force Chief of Staff Accelerate Change or Lose initiative and Air Force Materiel Command Strategic Plan lines of effort. The goal teams shifted efforts when needed for the worldwide AFIMSC workforce to optimize support to leaders and installations, said Patricia Marshall, AFIMSC Strategy chief.

“Regularly evaluating and adjusting goals and objectives helped us track progress and correct course as needed to ensure we’re providing effective installation and mission support across the DAF,” she said.

In 2023, AFIMSC is adding a fourth line of effort, Amplify Warfighter Culture, to better align with higher headquarters’ LOEs. The updated strategic plan will also include core capabilities and initiatives from AFIMSC’s four primary subordinate units for better integration and synergy across the center.

“We had a great 2022 and we’re looking forward to an even better 2023,” said Col. Kelly Sams, AFIMSC vice commander, who’s serving as the interim LOE 3 champion and will lead the new LOE 4. “I’m excited for another iteration of the AFIMSC Strategy. Toward the last half of 2022, we brainstormed and implemented refinements to the strategy, and it’s been great to look at how far we’ve come over the past two years.”

The 2023 AFIMSC Strategic Plan will be released in January. For a recap of the center’s major achievements in 2022, watch the end-of-year video and see the stories for operations that supported each LOE at www.afimsc.af.mil/Home/2022-Year-in-Review/
