By Presidential proclamation, October is breast cancer awareness month. The annual campaign works to increase awareness of breast cancer.

Both women and men can be diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection of the disease, along with treatment, often means positive outcomes and survival of the disease.  According to the American Cancer Society, deaths from breast cancer have fallen 40% between the years of 1989 to 2016. This survival success is attributed to early detection.

Beginning at age 40, women may begin routine mammogram screenings. These X-rays should become annual after age 45 through 54. Starting at age 55, women may elect to switch to bi-annual mammograms. There is no annual testing recommended for men. Men with high risk factors should speak with their doctor about screening.

Learn more about breast cancer by attending a virtual ‘Women’s Health’ class with Wright-Patterson Civilian Health Promotion Services (CHPS) this month.
