WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command employees not only “showed some love” to the annual Combined Federal Campaign Nov. 6, but to their hungry stomachs, as well.

The progressive lunch – the brainchild of Gail Forest, SES, director of engineering and technical management, AFMC – started last year and was so well-received, CFC organizers decided to hold it again, said Shawn Kain, HQ AFMC’s CFC chair and execution branch chief, Financial Management and Comptroller Directorate.

Participants prepared and contributed potluck items, then moved among four rooms to fill their plates. Representatives from two CFC-approved charities were stationed in each room.

“It’s a great awareness event, and we have people mingling throughout the building,” Kain said. “We are having good food and fellowship as we support the CFC.

“There are a lot of worthy charities, and a lot of them help our employees or their families or friends,” he continued. “There are so many charities of all different kinds. We’re all going to be in need of something sometime. This is a convenient way to contribute and give back.”

Kain noted that the campaign’s “blackout” period for people to donate ends Nov. 16, but donors can contribute until Jan. 11, 2019. Contributions support thousands of local, regional, national and international charities.

“Get with your key workers and get in your pledge online by visiting Ohio CFC’s website: www.ohiocfc.org,” he said. “There are a lot of options for you.”

Marc Shaver, airworthiness policy engineer, HQ AFMC Engineering Directorate, served as last year’s HQ AFMC CFC chair. He helped organize the inaugural progressive lunch.

“Once people were on board, they saw it was a lot of fun. We still have folks talking about it, and new organizations have joined in this year. We’re a food-driven organization,” Shaver laughed.

He was enthusiastic about having charities involved.

“It’s important for us to show people what is here locally,” Shaver noted. “For people who weren’t able to attend the CFC kickoff at the Nutter Center, they have an opportunity to see something new, something different.”

Volunteerism as well as monetary donations supporting CFC are most welcome, he continued.

“It’s a way to engage in supporting the community because the community is such a great supporter of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,” he said.

Susy Himelhoch, local CFC director, said donors may pledge with ease electronically or by using paper pledge forms. Donors may visit Ohio CFC’s website to search for charities participating in this year’s campaign, to pledge electronically or to download a pledge form at www.ohiocfc.org. Pledges can be fulfilled by payroll deduction through calendar year 2019, as well as by credit and debit card giving, and personal check.

“HQ AFMC’s progressive luncheon is a unique opportunity to showcase a few of the many charities that participate with CFC,” she said. “On behalf of our CFC’s board of governors and campaign leadership team, I extend sincere thanks to the volunteers who helped coordinate this year’s event and to those who lent their culinary expertise – all of which bolsters campaign success.”
